(Full disclosure, I got the game for free on the Epic Games Store when it was free during a limited time period, so I won't be talking about the game in terms of a product you should buy, I'm instead going to mostly be talking about the experience I had with the game, Spoilers for those who haven't played it)
ABZÛ is an ocean exploration puzzle game developed by Giant Squid and published by 505 Games. It was released back in 2016.
Without exaggeration, ABZÛ is a gorgeous game, from it's stylized visuals to it's beautifully crafted environments, it was a joy to see the underwater world the developers had crafted for the player.
But as you go deeper the underlining story of the game starts to unravel.
The game tells it's story without words allowing the player to infer what happened before they took the dive, but the message is always the same...
Whatever happened before, took a huge chunk of the ocean with it, they imprisoned the ocean with traps and sought to harness the ocean's power for themselves.
I have to admit I saw the twist at the end from a mile away, the story is a pretty simple one to understand and draws parallels to our own fight for marine conservation. I'm not really a huge conservationist myself, but throughout the game it made me think more about marine conservation and the effects it has on marine life.
Overall, I really enjoyed my experience with ABZÛ, it might not have the most complex story or engaging gameplay, but it tells a beautiful story through it's world and that's all I want from it.
