“ Local department of what now? “
“ Local department of supernatural occurrences sir.”
“ I’ve never heard of you.”
“ Well we were on the letter that was sent to you from the homeowner, did you even read the fine print?”
“ Well…No.”
“ Listen, just let me in, I’ll explain everything as we go along.”
“ Alright, come in.”
The strange man entered my home, weird devices and gadgets were strewn over his body, he walked towards the living room, placed what looked like a walkie talkie on the coffee table and sat down.
“ Please have a seat sir, this is gonna take a while. Let us start with your ghost problem.”
The man turned on the device on the table and the room instantly filled with the incessant drone of static.
“ John, NSO inspector, here to inspect the new owner’s upkeep.”
A voice that sounded like a young girl piqued over the static.
“ Mom, the inspector is here.”
“ Good day, could I have your name and your preferred title? “
A woman’s voice responded.
“ Good day to you too inspector, you may address me as Mrs Hatel.”
“ Now then, if you may, would you relay your needs to me.”
“ Ah yes, Susie and Johnny are getting quite bored with the toys they have to play with, the same dolls and puppets don’t interest them anymore, perhaps some of the newer toys we keep seeing on the TV would help, as for me, I would just like someone to talk to again, it would be great if the department could provide one of your devices for Mr Flick and his compatriots to communicate with us. “
“ Alright, we at the department will get on with those requests, thank you for your time Mrs Hetel.”
John turns off the device.
“ Now, I bet you have a lot of questions but let us deal with the demons first alright.”
John took some notes before turning back to me.
“ Where is the darkest place in your home sir? “
“ That will be the basement. “
“ That would be the most likely place for demons to lurk, now stick close to me, demons aren’t always friendly. “
I led John down the stairs to the basement, turning back every couple of steps to let him catch up. The basement always brought out a strange feeling in me every time I went down there, never did I expect there to be demons though.
“ Now, I’ll need you to hold onto this crucifix while I summon the demons from the darkness.”
John gave me a wooden crucifix, took two steps away from me and put his arms up into a t-pose.
“ Bring unto me, the darkest of monsters, for the light shall expire and the world ripped asunder.” John chanted.
A paled skin gargoyle emerged from the shadows, it inched ever closer to us before stopping a small distance away from the crucifix.
“ Damned crucifixes, speak human.”
“ John from the NSO, what would you require, demon.”
“ Ah, the NSO, know that this ceasefire will not last forever.”
“ I do think we cut your kind a good deal.”
“ Say what you will human but the time for our victory will come.”
“ Just tell us what you want.”
“ Live goats and make it quick, or we might have to turn to other sources of sustenance.”
“ Alright, thank you for your time, demon, now begone. “
“ By the light of the heavens, banish the darkness.”
And with that, the demon faded back into the darkness.
“ Now let us return back to the living room.”
We walked back up the stairs to the living room, John gestured for me to sit down across to him as he would explain what would need to be done.
“ Well, we’re going to need to buy some toys for Susie and Johnny, a spirit box for you to communicate with the ghosts and live goats for the demons to sustain themselves.”
“ So I have to satisfy the demands of these ghosts and demons?”
“ Well yes if you don’t want them to cause problems for you and other people.”
“But I ca..”
“ Listen, we’ve been doing this for years, you just need to meet their demands and nothing else will come of it. We will be providing all the items you need, you just gotta do it.”
John handed me a name card with the phone number and name of Sarah Marks.
“ Sarah’s gonna be handling your case, just make sure you remember to pick up whenever she calls.”
This whole thing felt like I was having hallucinations, ghosts? demons? Just more things on my plate to go through, if the taxes and job weren’t enough. But I knew better than to try to fight against things I don’t understand.
“ Alright, I’ll make sure to pick up.”
“ Thank You, Sir, I best be on my way.”
And with that, the inspector left.
